Students

By uniting our research aspirations and passions to inspire and equip tomorrow’s scientists and engineers, the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) can do much more together than separately to deliver transformative outcomes for society. Every year, more than 1,300 interns and research associates come to PNNL to participate in internships that provide hands-on experience and research opportunities working with leading experts in their fields.
You can find a variety of STEM internships that will build your research experience and provide career development opportunities. A few of the many options at PNNL include:
- Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI): 10-week summer or 16-week fall and winter/spring research internships for college sophomores, juniors, seniors, or recent graduates majoring in STEM fields or science policy. Applicants must be currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at an accredited institution (including accredited community colleges).
- The National Security Internship Program allows undergraduate and graduate students to work in various scientific fields related to national security.
- The PNNL Safeguards Internship Program hires undergraduate and graduate students with backgrounds in public policy and science and engineering fields and an interest in nuclear power and nonproliferation.
- The Minority Serving Institution Partnership Program for the National Nuclear Security Administration is a research-based experience for students who are traditionally underserved in STEM fields and have career interests aligned with NNSA’s mission to strengthen the nation through nuclear security.
-
The Energy and Environment Diversity Internship Program (EEDIP) is designed for students passionate about environmental and clean energy science. This competitive opportunity supports traditionally under-represented students in target technical areas through a 10-12 week paid internship. In addition to hands-on experience, interns receive mentorship by leading experts in their scientific fields.
As a UTEP student coming to PNNL, you will find that we have intentionally crafted your experience to provide immersive research experience. As part of your time with PNNL, you will be invited to join our premier internship development program, the PNNL Gold Experience. We believe investing in interns today is an opportunity to champion the future experts of tomorrow. This enhanced model for delivering an internship is all about your comprehensive experience as a PNNL intern. Our approach embraces PNNL’s core values of collaboration, courage, integrity, and creativity. We are committed to delivering a fulfilling, well-rounded experience from start to finish for our interns.
One way PNNL researchers, UTEP faculty, and UTEP students are connecting is through our collaboration portal. If you are a UTEP student, we encourage you to join today to build connections and your network.
Our aim is to provide UTEP students with research opportunities through internships and research associate options at PNNL. We have a number of open opportunities for UTEP students and you can see them on our Careers Page. Simply click below to start the process.
