Listening Sessions
PNNL hosted virtual listening sessions with multiple sectors which included: Tribal Representatives, communities, Independent System Operators (ISOs), Regional Transmission Operators (RTOs), Power Marketing Administrations (PMAs), utilities, and state agencies to solicit diverse perspectives and feedback about the intersection of transmission planning processes and energy equity. The listening sessions support potential opportunities to increase public awareness, education, engagement, and participation focused on equity considerations in transmission planning.
The goal of the virtual listening sessions were to:
- Identify potential sources of inequity in transmission planning processes.
- Capture experiences from listening session participants such as challenges, best practices, and lessons learned in transmission planning.
- Inform the development of resources including informational materials, research, and analysis.
Each listening sessions lasted less than two hours and took place between September and October 2024. PNNL is using feedback from listening sessions to inform research and the development of relevant publications and resources. These resources will support increased public awareness, access, and opportunities for participation in transmission planning processes.
Participants were invited to join the session aligned with their sector. Compensation for participation was available for Tribal Representatives and community participants and was distributed following the sessions.
PNNL staff shared the purpose of the project along with an overview of transmission planning and equity and justice for transmission planning. Download the presentation slides.
