Biography

Young Song is a postdoctoral research associate with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Biogeochemical Transformations team. Song’s research is focused on leveraging metagenomics and other omics-approach to investigate the diversity of soil microbes and their metabolic potentials pertaining to carbon-cycling processes. His other duties include developing methods for analyzing and visualizing metagenomics data associated with the Molecular Observation Network (MONet) and other user projects.

Song completed his doctoral training at the University of Queensland (2021), under the supervision of Profs. Phil Hugenholtz and Ulrike Kappler. His research involved applying metagenomics and proteomics to investigate the metabolic potentials of the recently discovered bacterial lineage, Dehalobacteriia. Outside of the research efforts, Song spends his time developing data visualization highlighting the importance of microbiology research and innovation in the society. Most of his visualization projects are created using Tableau Software and Adobe Creative Suite. Song's interactive summary of his doctoral project was included in the long list of the 2023 Information Is Beautiful Awards organized by the Data Visualization Society.
