Earth Scientist

Biography

Tom Wild is a senior Earth scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Joint Global Change Research Institute, and he is jointly appointed to the research faculty at the University of Maryland’s Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center, where he directs the Complex Systems Lab. His research focuses on MultiSector Dynamics. His formal training was in water resources and environmental systems analysis, but he now studies these challenges through a MultiSector Dynamics lens, considering water’s dynamic, uncertain, multi‐sector interactions with energy, land, climate, and socioeconomic systems across diverse spatiotemporal scales, from local to global. His research has spanned science and policy challenges across a wide range of systems, including water resources and environmental systems, energy–water–land systems, and the energy evolution, with recent focus on multiscale, multi-model power systems analysis. His research has contributed to developing sustainable hydropower systems, identifying and attenuating energy–water–land tradeoffs and conflicts, managing surface water quality, equitably sharing transboundary resources, and identifying long-term energy pathways. He holds MS and PhD degrees from Cornell University in civil engineering, and a BS degree from the University of Maryland in civil engineering.
