Thomas Blake
Biography
During the 1960s and 1970s, Thomas Blake grew up in bucolic, idyllic, heroic Newtown, Connecticut. He received his BS (1981) in chemistry with a minor in mathematics from the University of Bridgeport (Bridgeport, CT). He received his PhD (1989) in chemical physics from Wesleyan University (Middletown, CT) under the mentorship of Prof. Stewart E. Novick. Blake’s graduate work involved studying the fluorescence spectroscopy of molecular fragments, dissociated using 100 eV electrons, in supersonic jets. His research team’s interest was in understanding the electronic, vibrational, and rotational population distributions of the fragments in the cold jets. Blakes’s graduate work also included determining the structures of weakly-bound molecular clusters generated in supersonic jets using molecular beam electric resonance (MBER) microwave spectroscopy and resonant cavity Fourier transform microwave (FTM) spectroscopy.
He did his postdoctoral work (1988–1991) at the University of Washington under the mentorship of Prof. Robert Watts, where he examined the structures of weakly-bound molecules, again in supersonic jets, using infrared laser spectroscopy. He also received a National Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship to do research (1991–1994) at the NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California, with Charles Chackerian and James Podolske. There, the research team built protype infrared laser-based Zeeman spectrometers for detecting trace free radicals in the Earth’s atmosphere.
Blake started at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in 1994, working with Steven Sharpe. His research team measured rotationally resolved infrared spectra of jet-cooled molecules and molecular clusters to determine their structures and vibrational energy patterns. As part of the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, Blake managed the research group’s external user portfolio. The team published more than eighty peer-reviewed articles with two dozen external users over a twelve-year period. With James Kelly, Blake and team developed side band modulated infrared laser systems for performing remote sensing of gases. With Paul Gassman, Blake and team originated methods to measure and analyze infrared reflectance spectra of chemicals spilled on soils. Along with Tim Johnson, Robert Sams, and Sharpe, Blake and team started what later became the quantitative infrared spectral database that is now used by researchers to quantify concentrations of chemicals in the atmosphere. Using ellipsometry, Blake also measured infrared optical constants of materials of interest to optical reflection remote sensing. Many of these research activities continue to this day. Current research also includes understanding chemical source terms in industrial processes and the fate of chemicals released into the environment.
