Biography

Shannon Lee is a Materials Scientist whose research spans a diverse array of applications based mainly on the synthesis, advanced characterization, and development of materials. Her research recently focuses on hybrid solids that integrate both molecular- and extended- solid chemical bonding motifs, enabling the design of structures and precise control over physical properties including magnetism, second harmonic generation, and electronic/thermal transport. Her work emphasizes the development of foundational material design rules using basic chemical principles such as electronegativity, polarity, steric hindrance, atomic size considerations, and crystallographic disorder to guide the discovery of new extended crystalline condensed matter systems. She is excited about pairing synthetic experimental domain expertise to machine learning and artificial intelligence to greatly accelerate science.

Shannon is doing work on projects to support the missions of the Department of Energy (DOE) Basic Energy Sciences and DOE Isotopes. She has also been integral to the collaboration with Microsoft for Accelerated Materials Discovery.
