Satish K. Nune is a leader in advanced materials research at the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). He currently manages a multi-year, $6.3 million project (2021-2027) aimed at enhancing the utilization of domestic raw materials in the manufacturing of advanced building composite materials.

Since 2020, Nune also has overseen a critical project evaluating respirator cartridge performance against complex gas mixtures containing chemicals of potential concern.

With over 20 years of experience in materials research, Nune’s expertise encompasses precision chemical engineering, chemical functionalization, composite manufacturing, contaminant quantification, materials design, and the development of nanoscale porous materials. As a recognized expert in quantifying volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in complex environments, he leads a PNNL team assisting sponsors in identifying and measuring VOCs responsible for odors. Nune has authored 23 comprehensive Department of Energy reports focused on respirator cartridge performance against complex chemical mixtures. His scientific contributions include more than 75 peer-reviewed publications, 13 patents, two book chapters, and 12 cover features. His work has achieved international recognition, receiving over 5,200 citations from research groups worldwide and earning an h-index of 32.

In his role as team leader within the National Security Directorate at PNNL, Nune manages a multidisciplinary team of engineers, material scientists, and technical advisors dedicated to advancing materials production technologies. Beyond research, he is actively engaged in professional societies, including the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and the American Chemical Society (ACS), and serves on the editorial board of Scientific Reports, published by Springer Nature.
