Biography

Michael Huesemann has conducted experimental and theoretical research in environmental and marine biotechnology since the early 1990s and currently serves as the principal investigator for the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Bioenergy Technology Office funded DISCOVR (Development of Integrated Screening, Cultivar Optimization, and Verification Research) national laboratory consortium project in microalgae biofuels. He also leads the Advanced Research Projects Agency–Energy funded interdisciplinary UNrealized Critical Lanthanide Extraction via Sea Algae Mining (UNCLE-SAM) project on critical minerals biomining using seaweed.

Over the years, Huesemann has been the principal investigator on numerous major federal and corporate-funded research projects focusing on climate change mitigation technologies and biofuels production, which includes topics such as the mathematical modeling of microalgae biomass production, climate-simulated culturing in state-of-the-art light-emitting diode (LED)-lighted, and temperature-controlled raceway ponds, lipid synthesis by microalgae for biodiesel and jet biofuel production, fermentation of seaweed to ethanol and other transportation fuels, photosynthetic hydrogen production, biofixation of carbon dioxide from flue gases by marine microalgae, and the effects of ocean carbon sequestration on the nitrogen cycle.

Prior to his work on renewable biofuels, Huesemann conducted research on the bioremediation and phytoremediation of soils and sediments contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), which also included an extensive study of bioavailability limitations due to aging.
