Group Leader, Engineered Materials
Group Leader, Engineered Materials

Biography

Marvin G. Warner is a senior materials scientist and group leader for Engineered Materials at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), a Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science laboratory located in Richland, Washington. Warner’s research has focused on the synthesis, assembly, and characterization of multifunctional materials—semiconductor quantum dots, noble metal nanoparticles, diamond nanoparticles, and various two-dimensional materials—to discern new optical, electrical, mechanical, and quantum properties. He is focused on solving chemistry challenges present in materials systems for applications in quantum information science.

An experimental researcher by training, Warner has significantly expanded his collaborations over the last decade to include theoreticians and applied mathematicians for the explicit purpose of understanding a priori how materials design and synthesis impact function. Warner is the PNNL project manager for the Co-design Center for Quantum Advantage (C2QA), a multimillion-dollar DOE center funded in response to the National Quantum Initiative. The C2QA’s principal aim is to bring about functional improvements in the various parts of the quantum computing stack—materials, devices, software, and algorithms—through the deliberate application of co-design principles learned through the decades of classical computer design.
