Mark Bowden
Mark Bowden
Biography
Dr. Mark Bowden is a chemist with the Biogeochemical Transformations team in PNNL’s Environmental Molecular Sciences Division and the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) user program. He serves as the lead for the Biogeochemical Transformations Integrated Research Platform. As such, he helps develop the science and technology for EMSL users to understand interactions and transformations of key molecules in the near-surface environment. Additionally, he is responsible for the X-ray diffraction facility and assists or conducts measurement and analysis for many EMSL users. He has extensive experience in diffraction methods, especially in structure solution and refinement using Rietveld analysis.
Bowden's work at EMSL spans using high-resolution diffraction for detailed characterization of epitaxial thin films to identifying mineral phases in complex systems via microdiffraction. As part of the hydrogen storage program at PNNL, he researches the structure and mechanisms of hydrogen release from boron-containing materials and is collaborating to extend this work to new systems for small-molecule catalysis.
