Jose Marcial
Biography
Jose Marcial is a materials scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in the field of nuclear waste vitrification. His research focuses on kinetics of feed-to-glass conversion, glass structure-property modeling, glass alteration, archaeological materials characterization, nuclear materials characterization, and materials synthesis.
Marcial earned his PhD in materials science and engineering from Washington State University. After completing his PhD, he held a postdoctoral research assistant position at WSU under Dr. John McCloy, working on projects such as investigating glass structure-crystallization behavior relationships for nuclear waste vitrification and microstructural characterization of Bronze Age hillforts. The techniques used for these projects included laboratory-scale X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinement, electron microscopy/electron probe microanalysis, neutron and synchrotron X-ray scattering at various user facilities (APS, SNS, HFIR, and SOLEIL). Additionally, Marcial performed regular maintenance on high-temperature furnaces and an X-ray diffractometer.
Before joining PNNL in 2020, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague, Czech Republic. He also was a PNNL technical intern in high school and while earning his undergraduate degree.
Marcial also has trained undergraduate and new graduate students. He is passionate about outreach to the next generation of scientists and engineers, especial those who share his background as a low-income, migrant, first-generation college graduate.
