Biography

Douglas Mans is the Associate Laboratory Director for the Earth and Biological Sciences and Physical and Computational Sciences Directorates at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). Previously, he served as the director for the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL), a Department of Energy user facility.

As EMSL Director, he worked closely with the user community, other DOE Office of Science user facilities, and the Biological and Environmental Research program in promoting innovative research and fostering the creation of robust scientific teams and communities.  Under his leadership, EMSL has grown into a $70M project in FY26, and he was instrumental in enabling the conception and construction of the Microbial Molecular Phenotyping Capability, a $122M automation platform.    

Prior to joining PNNL in 2019, Mans led a portfolio of global external innovation projects and collaborations as the innovation director at Janssen Pharmaceuticals.  He spent most of his career at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), serving as a principal scientist and then manager during his tenure.
