Two professors at Washington State University (WSU) who hold joint appointments with PNNL were among the faculty members honored by WSU’s Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture.

Dr. John McCloy, a professor of mechanical and materials engineering, received the 2020 Anjan Bose Outstanding Researcher Award. This award is given annually to the top faculty researcher in WSU’s Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture. McCloy, who holds a doctorate in material science and engineering, has held a joint appointment with PNNL since joining WSU in 2013.

McCloy’s scientific contributions include over 125 journal publications, a book, two book chapters, and three patents. He is an American Ceramic Society (ACerS) fellow, a 2019 Fulbright Scholar, and a recipient of the ACerS Fulrath Award promoting US–Japan scientific collaboration. From 2017 to 2019, McCloy served as director of WSU’s Materials Science and Engineering PhD program.

McCloy was a researcher at PNNL from 2008 to 2013, working on materials development and spectroscopy projects. He has been involved with projects to develop immobilization technologies for nuclear waste management; derive novel means for detection radiation from illicit nuclear material trafficking; and monitor industrial processes in extreme environments, such as in coal gasifiers and nuclear reactors. As a materials scientist, McCloy is interested in aspects of solid-state physics and chemistry, particularly the structure of glasses and glassy phenomena in ferroelectric and magnetic materials.

WSU’s Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture also honored Dr. Yong Wang. Wang, who holds a doctorate in chemical engineering, received the 2020 Safety Award for his commitment to providing in-depth laboratory training that emphasizes both compliance with safety policies and proactively minimizing hazards to prevent accidents. Wang is the Voiland Distinguished Professor in Chemical Engineering, a PNNL laboratory fellow, and has been a WSU–PNNL joint appointee since 2009. Wang is best known for his leadership in the development of novel catalytic materials and reaction engineering for the conversion of fossil and biomass feedstocks to fuels and chemicals.
