A chemical engineer at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has been elected to the rank of fellow of the American Institute for Chemical Engineers. Reid Peterson was recognized for his accomplishments in nuclear waste processing for the treatment of high-level waste.

Peterson is an engineer in PNNL's nuclear sciences division. He leads the radiochemical sciences team that focuses on separation and characterization of nuclear waste, and he also serves as the program manager for all PNNL programs that support construction of the waste treatment plant at Hanford. He has authored more than 120 reports and 32 peer-reviewed publications and served as a peer reviewer for professional society publications. He earned a bachelor's degree and a doctorate in chemical engineering from Iowa State University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison respectively.

AIChE is the world's largest chemical engineering association, with more than 50,000 members from 100 countries. Fellows are elected for service to the profession and outstanding accomplishments, and is limited to five percent of the membership. Peterson will receive a fellow pin and plaque at the AIChE 2017 national meeting in Minneapolis in October.
