Eric Hoppe Named ACS Fellow

Hoppe recognized for scientific contributions and ACS volunteer service

Eric Hoppe

Eric Hoppe

Eric Hoppe, senior staff scientist within the Signature Science and Technology Division at PNNL, was selected as a 2019 American Chemical Society (ACS) fellow. The ACS Fellows Program recognizes a member for exceptional contributions to science and excellent volunteer service to the ACS community.

During three decades at PNNL, Hoppe has advanced research in analytical chemistry measurements and methods development, including assays determining extremely low levels of contaminants and advancements in materials purity such as for ultra-pure “electroformed” copper. Copper of this purity allowed next-generation fundamental neutrino and dark matter physics experiments to move from the theoretical realm into reality. Prior to his work to produce the world’s cleanest copper, Hoppe also developed some of the first analytical methods to measure organic constituents in Hanford tank waste and systems to perform real-time monitoring of air contaminants and engine exhausts.

Hoppe is a 37-year ACS member, during which time he organized local, regional, and national ACS meetings and symposia. He has taught as an adjunct instructor for Washington State University and Columbia Basin College and served as an organizer of the South-Central Regional Washington State Science Olympiad, an ACS-supported educational program. In addition, he has participated in the ACS National Chemistry Week involving students in hands-on chemistry activities and developed the popular “Solve a Crime with Chemistry” activity to engage K-12 students with analytical chemistry techniques.

Hoppe has been previously recognized for his undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral mentorship with the U.S. Department of Energy Mentor of the Year Award and the PNNL Laboratory Director's Award of Excellence.
