Cyber Risk Reduction![]() The increasing digitization of our world has created many innovations that bettered our world by introducing connectivity to systems that were never connected before. But it has also created a vast landscape of novel, often interconnected, risks and threats that traditional cybersecurity approaches are insufficient to address. The Cyber Risk Reduction group performs applied research leveraging PNNL capabilities in hardware, software, and firmware security to benefit sectors critical to national security by figuring out how to deconstruct, evaluate, and improve complex systems and develop tools, practices, and skills to meet these challenges.

The Innovative Security Solutions group provides vital solutions and support for securing key assets through conventional countermeasures, while simultaneously driving innovation in cyber-physical assessments and mitigations. The group uses its operational experience in asset protection to blend traditional cybersecurity and physical security into a holistic security approach, comprising a set of tools, techniques, and processes that fortify the protection of nuclear material and critical infrastructure.

The Strategic Threat Analysis group identifies emerging threats and develops threat-informed analysis and mitigation strategies for decision-makers that integrate data, scientific, and technical information. Our experts leverage a deep understanding of current challenges and emerging trends in climate security, nonproliferation, strategic trade controls, and regional affairs to propose solutions that address gaps in legal frameworks, outdated policies, or weaknesses in international systems and institutions.
