Cyber Risk ReductionThe increasing digitization of our world has created many innovations that bettered our world by introducing connectivity to systems that were never connected before. But it has also created a vast landscape of novel, often interconnected, risks and threats that traditional cybersecurity approaches are insufficient to address. The Cyber Risk Reduction group performs applied research leveraging PNNL capabilities in hardware, software, and firmware security to benefit sectors critical to national security by figuring out how to deconstruct, evaluate, and improve complex systems and develop tools, practices, and skills to meet these challenges.

Threat Prevention and ResilienceA suite of laws, policies, threat response programs, and international institutions work together to mitigate current and emerging national security threats. Yet, threat actors and the pace of technology development continue to challenge the integrity of this system. The Threat Prevention and Resilience group engages with international leaders, organizations, and practitioners to scan for emerging threats, understand evolving operating conditions, meet technology needs, and implement national security functions. These activities bolster the effectiveness and resilience to anticipate, detect, and mitigate national security threats.

Mission AlignmentWith the accelerated pace of technology development, innovations that once took years now happen in weeks. It is critical to have flexible R&D approaches that can adapt to and incorporate new tools and techniques. The Mission Alignment group brings together senior technical experts and strategic advisors with deep sponsor knowledge to build programs that leverage ET&T’s deep bench strength to address our sponsors’ hardest problems. |
Security OperationsAs threats to national security information adapt and expand at an accelerated rate, the battle to protect sensitive government information demands creative approaches to respond to threats and effectively mitigate the threats to national security information. The NSD Security Operations group envisions, builds, and maintains environments that enable PNNL staff to solve complex and sensitive R&D challenges while keeping national security information out of the hands of our adversaries. |
