Technology Overview
The sealed nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) probes developed at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) enable high-resolution NMR spectroscopy of radioactive and hazardous solid samples, including hazardous biological matter, such as infectious pathogens. By incorporating a unique sealed and filtered sample compartment, these probes ensure unparalleled safety and performance. This innovation addresses the critical need for secure handling and accurate analysis of dangerous materials in various scientific and industrial applications.
Analysis of hazardous materials by high resolution NMR spectroscopy involves significant risk due to the risk of contamination and endangerment of laboratory environments and personnel. Traditional NMR probes lack the necessary containment features, leading to potential contamination and operational difficulties.
The technology developed at PNNL overcomes these barriers by integrating a double-layer sealed compartment within the NMR probe. This innovative design comprises an inner polycarbonate container and an outer metal enclosure, both equipped with high-efficiency particle filters. The inner compartment maintains inert conditions for the sample, while the outer compartment serves as a secondary containment barrier. High-pressure gases necessary for magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR experiments are filtered upon exit, ensuring no hazardous particles are released.
The sealed probe design enables the containment of samples even during rotor failure, significantly mitigating the risk of contamination. PNNL scientists have engineered this technology to provide easy sample access, efficient containment for safe disposal, and stable high-resolution performance. The introduction of multiple safety layers and modular components facilitates convenient maintenance. This advancement revolutionizes the NMR analysis of hazardous materials by ensuring secure, reliable, and high-quality results, thereby enhancing operational workflows and safety standards.
APPLICABILITY
These NMR probes are ideal for laboratories and industries dealing with radioactive and hazardous chemical or biological samples. Potential users include research institutions, nuclear medicine developers, environmental remediation companies, and any entity requiring high-accuracy, safe analysis of hazardous materials.
