Abstract
In the invention, we disclose a novel 'single-particle-layer electrode" (SPLE) technology for facile processing of low-tortuosity electrodes for high-energy and/or power energy storage devices like batteries or supercapacitors. Increasing electrode areal capacity (i.e., mass loading) and reducing porosity are required to improve battery's energy/power densities. However, this is encountered with increase of electrode tortuosity, which decreases effective electrolyte ionic conductivity thus lowers energy/power output. Particularly for lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, built with nanosized sulfur/carbon (S/C) materials, the low-porosity electrodes suffer from high tortuosity that significantly deteriorates electrode wetting and sulfur reactivity. By using the invented SPLE technology, we have demonstrated successful processing of high-loading electrodes with both low tortuosity and porosity. As a result, the high-loading electrode at a porosity of 45% can deliver a high specific capacity ( >1000 mAh g-1) at a very low electrolyte/sulfur (E/S) ratio of 4 μL mg-1. This technology would be also applicable to improving the rate capability of other high-energy electrodes like graphite, Si, NMC, LFP etc. for fast charging or high-power applications.
