Sensors and Sensing

The vast distances in space as well as the harsh environment make the ability to know and understand everything that can affect operations a critical capability.
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s sensor and electronics research and development meets a broad range of sensor, measurement technology, electronic (including controls), and system integration application needs. Our scientists and engineers specialize in chemical, biological, physical property, and nuclear radiation sensors—as well as macro property measurements.
PNNL-developed sensor technologies can be used to collect and analyze data for a variety of applications in homeland security, safety, physical protection, emergency response, and more. These innovations include the wearable health monitoring system, VitalTag, a suite of sensors that enables first responders to monitor numerous patients in a mass casualty situation.
