Biography

Lal Mamud is a postdoctoral subsurface modeler at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), specializing in artificial intelligence (AI) driven predictive and traditional modeling for complex geosystems. His research focuses on developing physics-informed machine learning (ML) models for groundwater flow, multiphase transport, thermal processes, and parameter estimation in porous media. He also develops AI, ML, and deep learning models to enhance CO2 storage optimization, geothermal exploration, critical mineral identification using drone-based electromagnetic and hyperspectral data, and geophysical exploration utilizing electromagnetic, magnetic, and ground-penetrating radar data.

Before joining PNNL, Mamud gained extensive experience through research roles at Los Alamos National Laboratory and the National Center for Physical Acoustics. He has mentored students, conducted short courses, and is actively engaged in professional societies, such as American Geophysical Union (AGU), Environmental and Engineering Geophysical Society (EEGS), Geological Society of America (GSA), Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), and the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH). His contributions to geoscience research have been recognized with prestigious awards, including the David Miller Young Scientist Scholarship and the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award.
