PNNL biomedical scientist Ernesto Nakayasu was recently elected to the editorial board of the international peer-reviewed, open access journal Vaccines. The journal publishes articles about vaccine research, immunization, and other aspects of the immune response.

Cellular responses to pathogens include triggered signals and genes activated in response to an infection. The molecular-level details of these responses are fundamental to understanding an immune response.

To this position, Nakayasu brings his expertise in using the tools of systems biology, proteomics, and metabolomics to study host-pathogen interactions involving fungi, viruses, and parasites. He also studies the interconnection between the immune response and cellular metabolism, as well as cellular mechanisms of autoimmune diseases such as type-1 diabetes.

“Being an editor allows me to interact with both authors and reviewers towards publishing high-quality research that informs advances in basic research and the clinic,” he said.
