Addendum to Third Supplemental Cultural Resources Review for the Infrastructure Cleanup on ALE, Hanford Site, HCRC# 2008-600-004D: Documentation of No Adverse Effect from Filling Two Cisterns at the National Register-Eligible Archaeological Site 45BN01032

Abstract

The Third Supplemental Cultural Resources Review for the Infrastructure Cleanup on the Fitzner/Eberhardt Arid Lands Ecology Reserve, 600 Area, Hanford Site, Benton County, Washington, HCRC#2008-600-004D completed by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) Cultural Resources Project (CRP) for the U.S. Department of Energy, Richland Operations Office (DOE-RL) identified a National Register-eligible archaeological site 45BN01032, the historic Rattlesnake Hills Gas Field Compressor Station. The compressor station was the core of the Rattlesnake Hills Field gas distribution system which was in operation from 1929 until 1941. Within the industrial component of this site are two large rectangular concrete cisterns that were used for water storage, both located on the southeastern boundary of the site. The original remediation proposed by DOE-RL at this site was to remove t-posts, placed around both cisterns at some point after the gas field was abandoned. This undertaking was addressed in the Third Supplemental Cultural Resources Review for the Infrastructure Cleanup on the Fitzner/Eberhardt Arid Lands Ecology Reserve, 600 Area, Hanford Site, Benton County, Washington, HCRC#2008-600-004D where a recommendation of no adverse effect to 45BN01032 was made because the t-posts are not contributing components of the site. Subsequent to the initial finding of No Adverse Effect, DOE-RL now proposes to fill these two cisterns with basalt rubble for health and safety reasons. This document outlines measures that will allow the two cisterns to be filled with no adverse effects to site 45BN01032.
