Transforming Wildfire Mitigation Planning with an AI-Powered Database
NOVEMBER 6, ONLINE WEBINAR
PNNL has developed a publicly accessible Wildfire Mitigation Plan Database—a one-of-a-kind resource designed to support utilities, regulators, policymakers, and communities in addressing wildfire risk. This centralized hub provides access to more than 400 publicly available wildfire mitigation plans from 170 utilities across 19 U.S. states, spanning 2019 through 2028. With built-in search functions by location, utility, year, or type, the database makes it easier than ever to compare strategies and identify best practices. This webinar will provide an overview of the database, highlight emerging trends in wildfire risk reduction, and showcase its new AI-driven analysis tool, which accelerates the identification of gaps and opportunities across utility plans. Attendees will also hear a first-hand testimonial of the database in action and learn how this DOE Grid Deployment Office–funded resource is helping to shape smarter, data-informed decisions for wildfire preparedness and resilience. Wildfire and Consequences to the Utility Business Model Webinar
August 19, 2025 10:00 - 11:00 AM PT, ONLINE
The risks and costs associated with wildfire mitigation, liability, and cost recovery have the potential to pose an existential threat to the utility business model. In addition to direct damages to utility equipment and property, wildfire also poses a significant financial concern in the form of third-party liability and damages from ignition, with cascading effects to business practices. Associated risks include insurance cost and availability, credit ratings, and cost of capital for all types of electric utilities. In response, utilities are exploring a range of actions to mitigate potential impacts. State policymakers are also increasingly adopting legislation to clarify utility wildfire risk. PNNL researchers presented on key trends in wildfire-related risks to the utility business model, actions that utilities and state policymakers are taking to address some of these risks, and emergent questions for future work.
