Enabling grid planning and operation transition from the existing deterministic standards and methods to largely probabilistic approaches.



The primary existing approaches used by utilities are based on deterministically established dispatch and flow patterns, a few “typical” stresses, and known congested paths. Consequently, these approaches are becoming increasingly inadequate for dealing with the problem of growing uncertainty caused by variable generation, developing wide-area markets and other random factors. A new generation of probabilistic methods, reliability and control performance criteria, tools, and business practices is necessary to address these challenges.
