Case Studies
Port of Anacortes
The Port of Anacortes case study evaluates the port’s potential energy pathways and supportive technologies toward improved resilience and competitiveness. The project aimed to help the port develop a robust energy system capable of handling disruptions and maintaining critical operations. By evaluating the feasibility of deploying on-site and near-site diverse energy technologies, such as solar, wind, and tidal energy, the study provides detailed insights into energy demands and potential generation capabilities. Collaborative efforts between PNNL and the Port of Anacortes focused on creating a diverse and localized portfolio of energy solutions to navigate potential constraints from the electric utility and meet projected new loads from electric vehicles and vessels. The document also outlines strategic recommendations for improving energy system resilience. The comprehensive analysis offers valuable insights and pathways that other ports can follow to enhance their energy resilience and contribute to broader efforts in strengthening maritime sector infrastructure.

Seattle Waterfront Networked Microgrid Evaluation
Many ports are exploring innovative energy technologies, including vehicle and vessel electrification, that would significantly alter their energy environment. In Seattle, the Washington State Department of Transportation, along with Seattle City Light and the Port of Seattle, is implementing a hybrid electric ferry with charging facilities at Seattle’s Colman Dock. Seattle City Light is considering a large battery energy storage system to support ferry charging. This system would balance the significant power demand by spreading it over more extended periods when the ferry is away from the dock. Initial battery energy storage system research led to the exploration of various microgrid models, which include additional distributed energy resources and required infrastructure upgrades that could power critical infrastructure during significant power outages, such as those caused by a natural disaster.

Electric Cargo Handling Equipment
This case study examines the deployment of one type of electric cargo handling equipment, electric/electrified rubber-tired gantry cranes, to handle international container cargo. The use cases, operational demands, and load profiles can vary greatly across different electric cargo handling equipment types. This case study is based loosely on the experience of the Georgia Ports Authority, an operational port and early adopter of electric container handling.

Port Microgrid Deployment
This study provides an overview of the complex processes involved in deploying a microgrid at a large U.S. seaport and lessons learned along the way. It is loosely based on the Port of Long Beach’s microgrid deployment.
