Biography

Dr. Bruemmer has been involved in various basic and applied research programs in materials science during his 38 years at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Experience includes technical group leader, program manager and principal investigator responsibilities for a wide range of industry and government projects. He has led a group of material scientists and specialists focused on the study of materials interfaces and their influence on structural properties for more than 25 years. Research encompasses physical and mechanical properties for both simple and advanced materials and environmental effects on material behavior. This work has led to more than 330 technical publications and more than 75 invited presentations in the areas of grain boundary science, environmental degradation, crack-tip phenomena and radiation effects on materials. Areas of emphasis have been the high-resolution measurement, understanding, and prediction of microstructural and microchemical effects on the structural reliability of materials in nuclear power systems.

Research Interest

Experience in the microstructural and microchemical aspects of materials includes research on interfacial structure, segregation, precipitation and deformation mechanisms. Relationships between these aspects and degradation mechanisms such as corrosion, stress corrosion, hydrogen-induced cracking and embrittlement have been identified and analyzed. Research has centered on materials pertinent to energy production and transportation systems; e.g., stainless and low alloy steels, nickel-base alloys, aluminum alloys, special purpose metals and high-temperature intermetallics. This work experience has produced an applicable understanding of, and ability to integrate, analytical microscopy and spectroscopy techniques, electrochemistry, mechanical properties testing, failure analysis and computer modeling to predict material behavior. Much of his research has examined atomistic interfacial processes to help determine root causes for macroscopic failure phenomenon. The study of crack-tip processes in relation to corrosion and cracking mechanisms has been a focus of recent research activities.

Affiliations and Professional Service

  • Dr. Bruemmer has organized and chaired more than 25 conferences, symposia and workshops, and has served on numerous expert panels for the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the electric power industry dealing with materials degradation and failure. He is an adjunct faculty member at Washington State University and has developed and taught two graduate-level materials science courses: Interfaces in Engineering Materials and Corrosion Processes in Metals. Dr. Bruemmer has also initiated and helped guide research at the University of Michigan, Washington State University, Northwestern, Oregon Graduate Institute and the University of Illinois.

Awards and Recognitions

  • Dr. Bruemmer is a Fellow of ASM International and the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE), and a member of The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS) and the Materials Research Society (MRS). He has received several awards from these societies for various activities including the 2002 Distinguished Service Award for the Structural Materials Division of TMS.
