Biography
Dr. Mark Nutt is Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's Nuclear Program Director, overseeing PNNL's programmatic support of the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and commercial and international clients. Dr. Nutt evaluates emerging national, regional, and state energy and environmental priorities, policies, and programs to make sure our nuclear energy mission strategy and science and technology efforts are aligned with sponsors needs and are focused on having the greatest impact. Additionally, Dr. Nutt engages with U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission sponsor offices and private sector companies to communicate our ability to meet their needs, and coordinates PNNL’s responses to opportunities arising from these sponsors.
Dr. Nutt served as the chair of the Iowa Nuclear Energy Task Force that is advising the Governor on advancing nuclear energy in Iowa to strengthen the state’s energy portfolio, reliability and long-term growth. He previously served as the National Technical Director of the Integrated Waste Management program, in the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Nuclear Energy’s (DOE-NE), Office of Spent Fuel and Waste Disposition Program from 2014 through 2020 and was responsible for planning, coordinating, integrating, and managing a team comprised of national laboratories and contractors to support the DOE’s efforts to implement and integrated waste management system for spent nuclear fuel and high-level nuclear waste. He also served as the U.S. representative and from 2014 - 2023 was the chairman of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Technical Working Group for Fuel Cycle Options and Spent Fuel Management.
Dr. Nutt received his Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in Nuclear Engineering from Iowa State University. He has also received management and leadership education and training, including completion of the Strategic Laboratory Leadership Program at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
