Dr. Hu’s major research focuses on new nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) capability development aimed at pushing the frontier of NMR and the applications of NMR to address critical problems in the fields of catalysis science, energy storage, and biomedical science, etc. He pioneered the Combined High Temperature and High-Pressure magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR technique for in situ NMR investigations of reaction mechanism and dynamics, and a range of slow and ultra MAS, or magic angle turning (MAT) NMR techniques with sample spinning rate ranging from 1 to about 1000 Hz for enhanced spectral resolution in solids, semi-solids, and biological materials. 

Dr. Hu served as a principal investigator (PI) for several externally funded research projects that were separately funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH, one R01 and two R21s), one NASA ground-based space biology grant, and several of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s (PNNL) Research and Development (R&D) Initiative projects. He has been a key investigator for PNNL’s core-catalysis program (i.e., Department of Energy-Basic Energy Sciences (DOE-BES) catalyst program) since 2003 and a senior investigator for the on-going Joint Center for Energy Storage Research (JCESR, also funded by DOE-BES) led by Argonne National Laboratory since 2012. Hu is currently a co-PI for an on-going DOE-BES direct air capture project led by Washington State University and for a recently funded ARPA-E project led by North Carolina State University.

Dr. Hu is an author and co-author of more than 235 peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals, books, and encyclopedias, and has given a large number of oral presentations and posters at scientific conferences. His h-Index is 49, with more than 8700 web of science citations. He received two U.S. R&D 100 awards and 11 issued U.S. patents.

Research Interest

Dr. Hu’s current research interests and expertise include:

  • In situ and ex situ NMR characterization of heterogeneous solid catalyst materials, surface functional groups and active cites, molecular dynamics at the interface, reaction mechanisms and pathways
  • In situ constant flow and high pressure MAS NMR capability development
  • In situ NMR capability development for energy storage systems such as Li-ion and beyond Li-ion batteries
  • Ultra-high field NMR spectroscopy, quantum chemistry calculations to predict molecular geometry and the principal values of chemical shift tensors, and quadrupolar coupling constants
  • NMR line shape simulation, NMR pulse sequence design, programming, and testing
  • Developing magic angle spinning NMR metabolomics, in particular slow-MAS metabolomics, for biomedical applications.
