Since joining Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in 2008, Brian Collins has supported a diverse range of projects and teams within the National Security Directorate. Currently, Collins leads the Global Research Analysis group within PNNL’s Emerging Threats and Technologies Division. This group specializes in providing international technology assessments, cybersecurity, and research and development solutions to ensure the peaceful use of new technologies while also focusing on detecting, preventing, and countering the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. In his role as a project manager and task leader, Collins engages with sponsors, offering subject-matter expertise and training on projects related to analysis, nuclear engineering, and nuclear material production.

Previously, he was detailed to the Department of Energy Headquarters for two years, where he provided technical expertise as a subject-matter expert in nuclear engineering and nuclear material production. In his capacity as an analyst, he completed assessments of nuclear material production and security and informed decision-makers about current and historical events. As a nuclear engineer, Collins has supported a variety of projects and activities related to plutonium production, power reactors, and the fabrication of radioisotope heater units. His experience includes developing computer models and conducting field testing for radiation transport and detection, designing components for nuclear reactors, and collaborating on methodology development for nuclear material security. Additionally, he is a team member of the Plutonium Production Reactor Agreement and has taken several trips to Russia to monitor its shut-down plutonium production reactors.
