National Diversity in STEM

PNNL @ SACNAS
October 26-28

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) staff will be presenting a featured talk at this year’s SACNAS National Diversity in STEM conference.

PNNL proudly collaborates with academia and industry to forge pathways for underrepresented communities, fostering an environment where diverse perspectives and brilliant minds actively contribute to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). We believe in creating an environment where all our staff members feel safe, supported, and empowered to share their distinct perspectives and innovative ideas. This commitment to inclusivity fuels our groundbreaking STEM research.

Diversity at PNNL

Laboratory Director Dr. Steven Ashby explains:

“At PNNL, we are committed to fostering a work environment that fully embraces and values diversity and inclusion. By doing so, we benefit from a breadth of perspectives, insights, and experiences that enables the innovation and creativity one expects of a Department of Energy national laboratory.”

Beyond the Message: Strategic Storytelling for Engagement

Saturday, October 28, 2023, 11:45 a.m.–1:00 p.m. PT

Location: B 113–114

PNNL speaker: Ryan Risenmay

Global science calls for diverse voices and viewpoints. Everyone has a story worth sharing and a unique voice inviting inclusive understanding. While research institutions are often given the stage to showcase their scientific discovery stories, no story is complete without a view into the people behind the scientific journey. The world is poised to embrace a good message, but more importantly, the messenger. In this hands-on workshop, learn to strategically develop your own story and strengthen the storytelling skills that can help your message – and you, individually – stand out from the crowd. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has hosted team workshops with an in-house science communications training program, StoryLab, to help staff share research stories effectively with key audiences. This session will draw upon your experience and expertise, taking you through exercises to formulate a starting point for an individual science story that you can use with many audiences and scenarios.
