Exploring Three-dimensional Bioprinting to Detect and Characterize Pathogens

Three-dimensional printing (3DP) has revolutionized manufacturing, where complex structures can be designed and fabricated easily at relatively low costs. The advantages of 3DP have been exploited by adopting the practice in automotive, aerospace, and medical industries. Medical 3DP, which uses a process known as 3D bioprinting, combines biomaterials and cells to create 3D parts that mimic living tissues. 3DP materials can be used for extensive applications including tissue and organ transplantation, biosensing, and rapid drug screening. Here at PNNL, we are developing a 3D bioprinting capability to create biosensors that detect and characterize pathogens. Along the way, we have discovered the versatility of 3DP bioprinting in other areas such as materials development and education.
