The active products system currently consists of two parts: a “snippet” collector, which is a Windows desktop application that allows analysts to capture content from the applications they use, and an authoring environment, which is a web-based tool for viewing, managing, and organizing snippets into reports. A “snippet” is an analysis artifact together with its provenance information (such as the application from which it came and the sequence of operations that were performed to generate it). When information analysts make a finding, they often need to produce reports based on that finding and communicate their investigation and reasoning processes to others, such as colleagues or decision makers. The Active Products suite makes it easier for analysts to collect content from the applications they already use and to create reports that communicate their reasoning. Novel aspects of the product include its collaborative nature (analysts can share artifacts with each other), the ability to trace where an artifact has been used (i.e., find reports referencing a particular piece of evidence), and the aim of capturing analysis sessions as a series of interaction steps.
