This document is prepared by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in response to a U.S. Department of Energy request for a proposal describing vadose zone monitoring of liquid waste disposal facilities that are not part of the Tank Waste Remediation System. This document includes the needs and objectives of vadose zone monitoring and provides proposed rationale and general framework for vadose zone monitoring of past-practice cribs, ditches, trenches, and other disposal facilities. The monitoring described herein will be modified as necessary so as to be incorporated into the Groundwater/Vadose Zone Integration Project.
