IES TM-30-15 [IES, 2015; David and others, 2015] has the potential to change the way light sources are engineered and specified, helping to increase the benefit of electric lighting. Getting there, however, will require a paradigm shift in how we think about color rendering, and a concerted effort to choose better tools over familiar ones. Undoubtedly, engineering and specifying lighting is becoming increasingly complex, but this has been the case throughout history; the tradeoffs between cost, quality, and efficiency breed innovation, but also the need for better and more thorough ways to design products and differentiate between them. This editorial discusses the potential role of various subsets of the lighting industry in ensuring that TM-30-15 reaches its potential.
