Decarbonizing India’s Power Sector: Preliminary Synthesis of Project Results from the U.S.-India Model Intercomparison

Abstract

The GOI and USG are planning several steps in the near and medium term to enhance India’s capacity for energy modeling, recognizing that energy modeling provides essential analysis to support sustainable growth planning. Specifically, modeling teams from the two countries are conducting model intercomparison exercises to build capacity and to share useful initial results with Indian policy makers, which in turn can help clarify questions for future modeling exercises. The Planning Commission hosted a workshop with teams from various organizations/institutions to share their models and past research in April 2014. At the April meeting and in follow- up discussions, the consensus of the group was to jointly generate and model different scenarios of power-sector carbon emissions based on carbon intensity. This report covers results from the this round of model comparison and summarizes key policy implications from the exercise.
