Approach
Instructional designers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory use learning sciences to design and build training programs that provide trainees with competencies that can be applied to the job. Applying principles and methodologies from the results-driven learning sciences promotes effective and measurable learning outcomes. By following a systematic approach, the Instructional Systems Design (ISD) team develops comprehensive solutions, encompassing a wide variety of learning methods and modalities. The following is an overview of the methodical approach the ISD team applies when constructing a training program.

- Identify Learning Needs - To develop an effective training program, the ISD team takes a deep dive into the needs of the organization and the purpose of the training.
- Conduct Needs Analysis - A needs analysis defines the learners needs, identifies gaps, and sets goals for the training program.
- Design the Learning Architecture - The ISD team specializes in designing training programs that are aligned to organizational needs and are conducive to knowledge transfer and retention.
- Develop a Robust Training Program - To develop engaging learning experiences that are optimal for achieving intended learning outcomes, the ISD team explores ways to integrate traditional methods and forward-leaning advancements in technology.
- Implement the Training Event - During the implementation phase, the ISD team can provide guidance on how to facilitate the training event. This includes guidance on how to prepare the training materials and organize the learning environment for the best delivery results.
- Conduct Learner Analytics - Throughout the facilitation of a training program, the ISD team can optimize the learning outcome by using learning analytics to collect and analyze data about learners and their environments.
- Evaluate the Effectiveness of the Training Program - Conducting evaluations throughout all stages of the curriculum development process aides in the quality and effectiveness of the training program. By conducting evaluations, the ISD team can assess the effectiveness of the training program and make necessary changes so training can meet its intended goal.
In addition to developing new and emerging training programs, the ISD team also specializes in providing custom-tailored solutions. One of the provided options is updating and revitalizing outdated training materials to enhance mission-critical outcomes. By integrating the latest in instructional design theory and technology, we transform dated content into modern, effective learning experiences tailored to meet current objectives and future demands.
