Biography

Tirthankar Chakraborty (goes by TC) is a staff scientist in the Earth System Modeling group under the Atmospheric, Climate, and Earth Sciences Division of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). His broad research interest is in atmosphere-biosphere interactions, and he has worked on this topic across scales using both modeling frameworks and observations. Before joining PNNL in 2021, Chakraborty received his PhD from Yale University, where he developed a surface-energy budget perspective on aerosol-climate interactions by combining theory and global climate modeling. As a follow-up to this research, he has worked on the role of diffuse radiation and the variability of its representation across models on the terrestrial carbon, water, and energy budgets. His master's thesis was on urban climate, particularly the urban heat island effect and he has continued to work on various aspects of urban climate using satellite measurements, crowdsourced weather station data, and both process-based and machine learning models. His past contributions in this space include developing the most comprehensive global urban heat island dataset, conducting some of the first large-scale studies on urban heat disparities, examining the impact of urban humidity feedback on heat stress across scales, demonstrating key disagreements in global estimates of urban land, and isolating urban warming signals from regional to continental scales.

Chakraborty's current work at PNNL is focused on improving urban representation in land models and examining extreme events over coastal cities, and he contributes to three multi-institutional projects, namely Coastal Observations, Mechanisms, and Predictions Across Systems and Scales - Great Lakes Modeling (COMPASS-GLM), Integrated Coastal Modeling (ICoM), and Integrated Multisector Multiscale Modeling (IM3). TC is also the PNNL institutional PI on multiple other projects funded by DOE, NASA, and NIH on topics ranging from psychologically relevant heat stress estimates to impacts of energy transition scenarios on building energy demand.

Beyond his domain research, TC is interested in improving machine learning applications and general AI literacy among domain scientists and is involved in several internal PNNL efforts and communities to achieve this goal. TC has also been a long-term contributor to the Google Earth Engine (GEE) user community and uses the GEE cloud computing platform often for geospatial analyses. His contributions led to him being recognized as one of 26 inaugural GEE Developer Experts in the world.

Chakraborty received the U.S. Department of Energy Early Career Award in 2023 to improve urban representation in Earth system models through planetary-scale data-model integration. He also received the Ronald L. Brodzinski Award for Early Career Exceptional Achievement, a PNNL director’s award, in 2025 for his contributions to research, education, and societal impact, particularly in the context of urban effects on physical and human systems.
