Strategic Advisor and ARPA-E Sector Director

Biography

Dr. Sonja Glavaski serves as a strategic advisor for the Energy and Environment Directorate at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). In this role she has developed an Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning Energy Systems Strategy and is leading several efforts to develop data-driven methodologies for control and automation of critical infrastructure, power generation, and urban transportation. At the same time, she serves as PNNL's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) Sector Director, managing a portfolio of multi-disciplinary projects developing high-risk, high-reward technologies that will further impact applied energy programs.

During her career in industry and government, Dr. Glavaski has made significant contributions to scientific advancements in the fields of data science and control systems for multiple application areas, including energy systems, as well as vehicle and aircraft systems. Most recently, she was a program director at the Department of Energy's ARPA-E, where she established and supported pioneering programs and initiated several new ARPA-E program clusters. Most notably, she established and managed the ARPA-E NODES Program, developing technologies that reliably manage dynamic changes in the grid by leveraging flexible loads and distributed energy resources.

Dr. Glavaski is an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Fellow. She is a member of the IEEE Control Systems Society Board of Governors, and serves on various scientific advisory and review committees.
