Biography

Kris Hand is a biologist in the Ecology Group who conducts work in environmental compliance, terrestrial ecology, wildlife biology, and fisheries. Currently, her primary focus is as Subject Matter Expert (SME) in environmental permitting. She manages the Environmental Research Permitting (ERP) Program as a matrixed staff member under the Environmental Protection and Regulatory Programs Division. Through her role as ERP Program SME she facilitates research and strengthens environmental compliance through providing consistent regulator interface, obtaining research permits, maintaining a searchable permit database, and tracking reporting requirements. During the formation of the ERP Program, she played an integral role in the development of the Environmental Permitting Information Center (EPIC). Kris also performs shrub-steppe habitat field surveys and ecological risk assessments, leads the noxious weed control task covering undeveloped portions of the PNNL Richland Campus, applies GIS/cartography skills in support of various projects, and is involved in studies of juvenile salmonid passage and survival through hydropower projects on the Snake and Columbia rivers.
