Biography

Kimberly Tyrrell is in the Exposure Science and Pathogen Biology group within the Biological Sciences Division and is involved in a wide variety of projects dealing with both soil and animal microbiomes, as well as other scientific disciplines. She is part of the animal care and use program as both a licensed veterinary technician and as the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) coordinator. The multifaceted bench skills Tyrrell has gained while at PNNL allow her to be diverse in the types of research projects that she assists on, including chemical biology, molecular biology, and exposure science.

As part of the animal research team, Tyrrell's focus is to help provide an array of animal research opportunities to various projects and programs related to both human and animal health. She has been instrumental in standing up the new germ-free/gnotobiotic facility within the Animal Resource Center. The addition of these unique animal laboratories has created a great opportunity in supporting research on the gut microbiome and in examining the metabolic connection with host physiology. Tyrrell also currently serves on the organization’s Directorate Safety and Operations Council as a cognizant space manager (CSM) or delegate CSM of multiple laboratory spaces and as a Level 2 Technical Oversight Representative.
