Biography
David Hume’s 15 years of work experience spans multiple sectors of the ocean economy, including maritime transport, fisheries, offshore energy, robotics, and defense. He has spent years at sea as a merchant mariner and worked aboard a variety of vessels, from liquefied natural gas tankers to containerships.
From 2019 to 2022, Hume served on assignment to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) supporting the Office of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency’s transport portfolio, coordinating maritime research across the DOE, the Maritime Administration, Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Coast Guard, and State Department. He was instrumental to U.S. participation in the Mission Innovation: Zero-emission Shipping Mission, green shipping corridors, and the U.S. Action Plan for Maritime Energy and Emissions Innovation.
Hume is a U.S. Coast Guard licensed marine engineering officer and a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy Reserves. He serves as a mentor and advisor for several ocean tech startups, investment funds, and innovation hubs. He is also the founder of The Liquid Grid, an educational website on ocean energy technologies.
