Biography

 

Christian Kaltreider joined PNNL in 2022, with 15 years of prior experience working in building systems, energy efficiency, renewable energy, and construction. At PNNL, Christian contributes technical guidance for a variety of projects involving high-performance HVAC systems, moisture durability and thermal performance of building assemblies, disaster resistance, and many other building science topics. His primary work at PNNL currently includes supporting the development of instructional content for the Building America Solution Center, making technical building science concepts accessible for builders. 

Before joining PNNL he worked as an engineering consultant on energy savings performance contracts, net-zero energy projects, and high-performance HVAC design efforts. He holds a master’s degree in building systems engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and a bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Prior to his university studies Mr. Kaltreider worked in residential construction for 5 years, gaining hands-on experience with every phase of the construction process. His interests and expertise include building science, HVAC systems and controls, renewable energy, passive solar building design, biomass heating, and low-tech innovation. He enjoys writing and presenting instructional materials to explain technical topics to non-technical audiences. Christian was awarded U.S. Patent #11026500 as sole inventor in June 2021.
