Christopher Brown, PhD
Christopher Brown, PhD
Biography
Christopher Brown is a senior Earth Scientist in the Radiochemistry group within the National Security Directorate at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). Since joining PNNL in 1998, Brown has served in various roles, including chief scientist and lead for the Radiochemistry group. From 2010 to 2022, Brown managed the National Risk Assessment Partnership Program, where he developed the science-based tools needed to assess risk at CO2 storage sites.
In his current role, he maintains an active research portfolio across several applied program areas, including the National Nuclear Security Administration, Special Programs sponsors, and the Department of Energy's Office of Fossil Energy. Since 2015, he has been using PNNL's ultratrace mass spectrometry capabilities to better understand deep subsurface transport of fluids and apportion source terms for subsurface contamination and remediation and to develop new signatures of human impact on the environment.
Throughout his career, Brown has managed complex, first-of-their-kind field projects, including PNNL’s role as the subsurface lead on the FutureGen 2.0 project and the Basalt Pilot project (deputy project manager) within the Big Sky Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership. Early in his career, Brown developed and tested waste forms for immobilization of Hanford's high- and low-activity waste, developed conceptual models for Hanford's waste sites and operable units, and developed risk-based alternatives for tank retrieval and closure.
