Katrina Waters, EBSD, will present "Unlocking the Secrets of Ebola: Measuring the Molecular Clues of Survival."
Viral outbreaks can be devastating and scary, even when they occur halfway around the globe. During the Ebola outbreak in 2014, it was a race against time to determine if the vaccine developed during the 1970s would be effective against the latest strains, and if not, how to stop the spread of the virus and treat those who were infected. Our work in this area leverages strong biological science capabilities to measure molecules that can diagnose disease and computational capabilities to design strategies that improve human health. This talk will describe our research to identify biomarkers that determine which patients infected with the Ebola virus face the greatest risk of death and how we are translating that work into clinical tools for screening and treatment.
