METHODS AND SYSTEMS FOR ION MANIPULATION

Patent ID: 9537 | Patent Number 10,497,552 | Status: Granted

Abstract

Spiral Travelling wave Ion Mobility Spectrometer is an ion mobility spectrometer which utilizes a spirally moving travelling wave to confine and separate ions. Herein, we disclose a novel device that uses circular traveling waves to effect ion confinement. By using a ring shaped device with 8 segmented electrodes (in one embodiment) we demonstrate that ions remain confined within the circular geometry without approaching the electrode surfaces. Each of the electrodes form a sequence of electrodes to which a TW is applied. When rotated at a given frequency, the ions with a mobility lower than a threshold (determined by the TW frequency) remain confined within the device for indefinite time. By adjusting the TW frequency ion confinement can be achieved under atmospheric pressure conditions and lower pressures (i.e. down to vacuum regions where low E/N conditions prevail or in other words ion motion is predominantly governed by their mobilities). By arranging multiple stacks of these rings a reasonably large confinement volume can be built. Also, in one demonstration, offsetting the 8 electrode sequence between two adjacent sets of rings, a spiral TW is created to effect ion transport and TW based separations.
