Abstract
Velo is the domain independent collaboration environment originally created as the basis of the Geological Sequestration Software Suite (GS3) under the Carbon Sequestration Initiative (CSI) LDRD program at PNNL. The enviroment supports teams in performing scientific research including setting up computational models, running simulations, and analyzing/visualizing simulation output. Velo is composed of three different components each described in a separate IDR: Velo Data Management Velo Wiki User Interface Velo Rich Client User Interface These components are applied in different combinations along with domain specific customizations including adding new tools and data handlers to create the final deployment such as the Geologic Sequestration Software Suite. All deployments use the Velo Data Management component. Typically only one of the two user interface components is layered on top of the data management component, although it is possible for both the Web browser based Wiki User Interface and the Rich Client User Interface components to both be part of a single deployment as is the case with GS3. This IDR specifically addresses the Velo Data Management component that manages the files and metadata about those files that are added by users of Velo. The open source Alfresco content management system underlies the Velo Data Management component. To Alfresco Velo adds unique features that are available via a Java Application Programmer's Interface (API) to developers building on the Velo Data Management component. The Velo Wiki User Interface and Velo Rich Client User Interface have developed from this API to make the Velo Data Management capability available to users of full Velo deployments. The unique features added in the Velo Data Management component are: Improved data indexing performance Improved file upload performance Automated customized metadata extraction Alerting (notification) framework Team management framework Structured metadata, annotations, etc. for taxonomies of data Explicit access control (permissions) on taxonomies
