Our facilities include the physical assets used to complete our research. These include laboratory spaces that PNNL operates, scientific user facilities we manage, instruments developed and housed within our facilities, and even the aircraft used to complete advanced atmospheric research in flight.
Atmospheric Measurements Laboratory
The Atmospheric Measurements Laboratory (AML) is one of the nation’s leading research facilities for understanding aerosols, clouds, and their interactions. Within AML are environmental and ice nucleation chambers and three different radar laboratories, including two indoor areas and an outdoor radar yard.
Atmospheric Radiation Measurement User Facility
The Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility is a multi-laboratory, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) scientific user facility, and a key contributor to national and international climate research efforts.
Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Aerial Facility
Aerial observatory capabilities of the ARM user facility are operated by the ARM Aerial Facility (AAF). The AAF provides airborne measurements required to answer research questions proposed by scientists from around the world.
Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory
The Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) is a DOE Office of Science user facility sponsored by the Biological and Environmental Research (BER) program. At EMSL, scientists focus on fundamental biological and environmental research, and collaborate on projects with researchers from academia, other government laboratories, and industry.
