With the 2008 Renewable Energy Development Plan and its 2015 Alternative Energy Development Plan, Thailand has demonstrated its determination to change its energy system into a more sustainable one, employing renewable energy and setting consumption targets for renewable fuels. These policy decisions have endured several challenges, including changes in government, as well as a recession and economic turmoil. Yet in spite of these obstacles, the government of Thailand has continued its support for ethanol production and consumption in the vehicle sector. This report provides and update to Thailand's alternative fuel activities and shows how an almost ironclad determination to continue support for alternative fuel production and consumption can lead to a market transformation.
