The Influence of Occupancy on Building Energy Use Intensity and the Utility of an Occupancy-Adjusted Performance Metric

Abstract

PNNL was charged by the Green Building Advisory Committee's Energy Use Intensity (EUI) Task Group to investigate whether a refined EUI metric that accounts for occupant density and utilization might provide a more accurate understanding of the true energy footprint of a building. The objectives of this study were to assess the influence of occupancy on building energy use and EUI in a few typical office buildings, where occupancy is based on the concept of a full-time equivalent occupant.
