Finding a Way: The Potential for Adoption and Diffusion of Carbon Dioxide Capture and Sequestration Technologies

Abstract

Carbon dioxide capture and sequestration (CCS) technologies face formidable technical barriers. But just as formidable are the implementation issues that must be addressed. CCS developers should exploit existing structural opportunities for innovation of electric power systems and current weaknesses in these systems, rather than trusting that “technology will find a way.” Essential aspects of the diffusion process are the policy reform, technological innovation, managerial improvement, financial resources, and social acceptance/cultural knowledge. The diffusion process is nonlinear and highly interactive; thus, efforts in all areas need the coordination of network links in order to create a pathway to successful diffusion.
